Abstract: This paper assesses the effect of the creation of specialised intimate partner violence (IPV) courts on the reporting of these crimes and on the incidence of IPV homicides. To achieve this goal, we exploit the sequential roll-out of specialised IPV courts throughout Spain by applying a difference-in-differences strategy over a sample of treatment and matched control districts. We find that the opening of a specialised IPV court decreases the time to resolution of IPV cases in the district by 65% and increases the reporting of IPV by approximately 24%. On the other hand, we do not see any effect of these courts on the incidence of IPV homicides within the period studied. The latter results open the debate on whether improvements in the reporting of IPV, particularly of less severe forms of IPV, might be enough to decrease IPV homicides.
